Noise & Airport Operations

An increase in pilot training, glider flights, search and rescue and visitors to the Ken Jernstedt Airfield have affected residential neighborhoods near the airport, with area residents expressing concern about airplane noise and safety.

The Port held two public meetings focused on the issue. The first occurred on June 22, 2017 and was primarily a listening session, enabling Port and FBO staff to hear directly from neighbors and airport users about these issues. The second took place on August 31, 2017 and was focused primarily on providing information about current and planned airport operational changes made in response to resident concerns, and also on providing information in general on regulations and restrictions governing airport operations. Anne Medenbach, Port Development & Property Manager and Jeremy Young, TacAero President, gave a presentation focused on aircraft operations and planned development as well as general information on flight patterns and the Fly Friendly program currently being developed for the airport.

Utilized broadly throughout the country at general aviation airports like the Ken Jernstedt Airfield, Fly Friendly programs provide and encourage pilots to use certain flight patterns and other operations to reduce noise impacts on surrounding neighborhoods. Compliance is voluntary, not mandatory. The Airport Advisory Committee will be working to develop the Fly Friendly recommendations for the Ken Jernstedt Airfield in the coming months.
