Welcome To Ken Jernstedt Airfield

The Ken Jernstedt Airfield, nestled in a wide valley two miles south of Hood River, is a Basic Utility, Stage II Airport named for a celebrated WWII Fighting Tigers pilot who later became a local and state politician.

The Airport serves approximately 15,000 flight operations annually, and provides storage for approximately 100 aircraft stored in three-dozen T-hangar spaces, or tied down on the tarmac. The Airport’s Fixed Base Operator (FBO),TacAero, offers self-serve fuel, flight school, private lessons, sight-seeing flights, aircraft rentals and mechanic services.

Air transportation in the region promotes important Port of Hood River goals related to economic development and enhancement of quality of life. At 638 feet elevation, the Ken Jernstedt Airfield also provides essential services to the surrounding area as a base for emergency response in fire fighting, search and rescue operations, and urgent medical care.

Approximately every seven years, the Port of Hood River updates its Airport Master Plan, the most recent of which was adopted in January, 2016. This important document includes analysis and forecasts of demand, facility requirements and improvements, development options, Airport area issues, and qualifies the facility for the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) Airport Improvement Program.

Over the years the Port has made considerable investment in Airport improvements, most recently the Runway Shift Project to move the strip east away from State Highway 281 (Tucker Road), adding a grass landing strip to serve the hundreds of vintage aircraft that land at the Airport each year, slurry sealing taxiway pavement, and more.

The Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum (WAAAM) is located adjacent to the Ken Jernstedt Airfield, with its unique collection that draws national interest. WAAAM also hosts an annual Fly-In at the Airport, attended by a few hundred planes each September.

With a priority on safety, the Port of Hood River ensures the Ken Jernstedt Airfield continues to enrich the community and provide vital services as an essential facility for Hood River County’s future.
