Winter 2025 Newsletter - Welcome Commissioner Thomas

On July 7, 2025, Kathryn Thomas was sworn in as the newest Port of Hood River Commissioner. A member of the Hood River community since 2021, Commissioner Thomas brings years of board experience to the Commission. A small business owner, Commissioner Thomas is a member of the Hood River Chamber and has played an important role as a member of the Hood River-White Salmon Bridge Authority (HRWSBA), the bi-state group behind the bridge replacement project. It was through the HRWSBA that Commissioner Thomas became familiar with the Port and its purpose, and met Port Commissioner Mike Fox, who encouraged her to run for his seat when he stepped down in 2025. Commissioner Thomas thought the idea had merit, as she saw the importance of continuity and clarity from the HRWSBA and Port on replacement efforts. Her experience in the military and as a small business owner, brings a strong set of skills to the Port Commission: a focus on sustainable and responsible financial stewardship, strong communication, and a desire for transparency in all aspects of Port governance.
Commissioner Thomas believes the Port is in a time of transition, with the upcoming Strategic Business Plan playing a huge role in the shaping of the Port’s future. Unafraid to ask the hard questions, Commissioner Thomas brings a new voice to the table and seeks to thoroughly understand the Port’s current responsibilities and role in the community. Though this is a time of transition, Commissioner Thomas is honored to have a seat at the table, and firmly believes that this group of Commissioners, and the fantastic Port staff, will lead the organization with integrity, transparency, and vision. To do so, Commissioner Thomas strongly believes that the voice of the people will make the difference, “The Port has great engagement. The challenge is to really listen with an open mind.” She believes the community (and not just the constituents of the Port) deserves to be heard, an opportunity they will have as the Port prepares for the Strategic Planning session.
And the future of the Port? Commissioner Thomas finds many of the Port’s challenges an exciting opportunity for growth. She sees exciting things happening at the Ken Jernstedt Airfield. Thanks to the hard work of Commissioner Tor Bieker and the airport staff, the budget is looking healthier and more self-sustaining. With plans for a new terminal building, there is a possibility for the airport to become fiscally solvent, a huge milestone for the Port. Since her inauguration in July, there have been huge steps in solving the parking issues along the waterfront; new parking software and new parking lots will ease the frustrations voiced by many. And on the bridge side, she has been impressed by the staff’s thoughtful planning and mindfulness of a toll-less future for the Port of Hood River, through cutting spending and costs where they can. While there are continued challenges for the Port, Commissioner Thomas is ready to meet them, and excited to bring her voice, and the community’s, to the table.
