Focused on the the Future

A letter from Port Commission President Heather Gehring
We have reached a pivotal moment for the Port of Hood River, and I must admit, I am excited about what the future holds. My fellow Port Commissioners and I, along with Port staff, have initiated the in-depth process of creating the next Strategic Business Plan. This plan will provide the framework for the development, investment, economic, and financial focus of the Port from 2026-2032. In previous plans, the bridge has been a huge focus, but thanks to the hard work of the Hood River-White Salmon Bridge Authority, the bridge replacement project is underway, and we are collectively holding hope for construction to begin in the near future.
What does the future of the Port look like without a bridge? That is exactly what the Commission, staff, and community will decide during the process of creating a Strategic Business Plan. We will spend the next six months looking at the issues the Port faces from all angles, diving deep into the costs and benefits of each project. While the task may seem daunting, this is an exciting opportunity to understand the Port at a deeper level. Commissioners are adamant that transparency leads the way, and each step and outcome of this process will be available to the public. We work hard to maintain meeting minutes, agenda packets, and archived livestreams of all Port Commission meetings so that our constituents, neighbors, and friends can stay up to date on the various projects the Port has in the works.
As we move through an era of planning the Port’s future, please know that we are constantly considering our constituents, the people we represent and serve. Each project, plan, and vision must support the mission statement by working to promote and maintain a healthy economy and strong quality of life in the Port District and throughout the Columbia Gorge. On behalf of myself and my fellow Port Commissioners, we thank you for your support and ask that you contribute to the process. Check the Port’s website frequently so you can know when to attend public meetings, open houses, and planning sessions. We want your input! Join us as we plan the future of your Port of Hood River.
